At St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School, our scholarship program is at the heart of our mission — to uplift bright, deserving orphans from financially challenged backgrounds. We believe that academic potential should never be wasted due to lack of means, and our scholarship initiative is a bridge to opportunity, hope, and a better future for students drawn primarily from Kibera and surrounding communities.
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be Kenyan students who have scored 300 marks or more in the KCPE examination. They must be orphans coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly from Kibera slums and nearby areas. In addition to academic qualifications, applicants are required to demonstrate a willingness to commit to the school’s values, rules, and learning environment.
A Transparent and Thorough Selection Process
After eligibility is established, the recruitment process begins with shortlisting. The scholarship committee carefully reviews all submitted forms and documents — including KCPE results, birth certificates, and death certificates where applicable — to identify applicants who best meet the scholarship criteria. Shortlisted students are then invited to sit for written assessments covering three primary-level subjects.
Oral Interviews with Families
Candidates who perform well in the written exams proceed to oral interviews, which are conducted with both the student and their caregivers. This stage allows the committee to verify details in the application, assess student commitment, and gain a clearer understanding of the family’s situation. The interviews help ensure that selected students not only qualify academically but also align with the school’s ethos.
Home Visits for Deeper Insight
As part of our commitment to fairness and integrity, every shortlisted candidate undergoes a home visit. This vital step allows the admissions team to observe living conditions, verify financial need, and confirm that the applicant genuinely meets the scholarship requirements. These visits provide essential context beyond what can be captured in forms and interviews.
